Training is the backbone of firefighting. It takes over 200 hours of classes just to become a core firefighter: OSHA, Firefighter 1, Firefighter 2, hazardous materials, flammable liquids, auto extrication, first aid, and CPR. On top of that, firefighters are required to undergo 20 hours of training a year, eight hours of hazardous material training a year, and a controlled burn every quarter.
